Join us for a free online workshop in partnership with Pride UK Training and Consultancy, exploring how to create inclusive art spaces for Older LGBTQ+ people.
We know from evidence that engagement in the arts not only brings people out of their everyday lives and provides opportunity for connection with new ideas and experiences in interesting ways, but it can also develop awareness of new ways of creative thinking that can improve general health and wellbeing and lead to enriched lives in older age.
This is particularly beneficial for the older generations of LGBTQ+ people for whom social isolation hits particularly hard and community engagement can be relatively low in their later years. Some of this is because of physical frailty, but some is from anxiety about how they will be treated by new people away from home. Growing up in the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, older LGBTQ+ people are much less likely to have children looking after them, or extended family members to meet up with at arts events, so venturing out alone to engage with new experiences also brings with it the risk of misunderstandings, potential social embarrassment or prejudice that can reinforce the bad days of the past.
This 90 minute webinar presentation, with opportunities for individual contributions and groupwork, helps Flourishing Lives partners understand the very different lives experienced by many older LGBTQ+ people, gives examples of research, training, and accreditation available to strengthen development of inclusive LGBTQ+ art space’s, and shares information and resources to help reach out to the LGBTQ+ community more confidently and build relationships with LGBTQ+ arts organisations in order to influence change for the better.
The session – delivered by lesbian and gay HR professionals with 30 years’ experience of LGBT+ equalities training and consultancy – will address:
- Relevant research into the lives of older LGBTQ+ people
- Living as LGBTQ+ in the hostile climate of the 1950’s – 1980’s
- The medical establishment treatment of homosexual illness
- Later life as LGBTQ+ and anxieties of approaching home care alone
- The Pride movement and section 28 fightback for LGBTQ+ human rights
- How induction, training and accreditation strengthen LGBTQ+ inclusion in the arts
