Intergenerational Forum: ‘It’s on the Cards – Challenging Ageism through Intergenerational Dialogue’

Join us for a free online gathering, in partnership with Magic Me. The Intergenerational Forum is an informal space for arts & wellbeing providers to meet and share ideas around developing intergenerational practice in their services.

‘Over the hill’ at 40? ‘Past your sell-by date’? Birthday cards are often the first place we see casual ageism disguised as humour. But what happens when you ask primary school children and their older neighbours to investigate these stereotypes together?

Join Magic Me Associate Artists Sue Mayo and Skye Baker, alongside Creative Director Kate Hodson, to hear more about It’s on the Cards. This intergenerational arts project – currently showcased at London’s Wellcome Collection ‘Coming of Age’ Exhibition – used birthday cards as a catalyst for intergenerational discussion and to imagine a new way forward.

In this session, we’ll explore:

  • Magic Me’s intergenerational arts practice and collaboration with the Wellcome Collection
  • The Birthday Card Lens: How birthday cards can be used as creative tools to spark conversations about ageism
  • The ‘co-researcher’ model where children and older people work together to challenge stereotypes
  • Interactive Dialogue: Join an open discussion on how to creatively challenge ageism in your own community.

About the Intergenerational Forum:

This forum is an informal space for peer sharing and learning. We meet three times a year and anyone who is interested in developing their intergenerational practice is very welcome to join!

This forum is for arts and wellbeing providers who want to:

  • reflect on learnings from intergenerational projects
  • celebrate the successes
  • discuss the challenges
  • meet other people interested in sharing & developing intergenerational practice in their work
  • and discuss ideas for how we can create more opportunities for intergenerational connections going forward.

Join us to share ideas, refine your intergenerational practices and meet other progressive people who are striving to innovate and excel in services for older and younger people.

About Magic Me

Magic Me is a leader in intergenerational arts activities. We build stronger communities, foster wellbeing and combat loneliness by bringing younger and older people together via extraordinary creative activities. From our base in Tower Hamlets, we’re one of the leading voices in intergenerational exchange.

Featuring everything from parades to poetry books, filmmaking to carnivals, 50 foot murals to finger puppets, our community arts projects are developed in partnership with schools, sheltered housing providers and other community hubs to connect people of different ages.

Our Associate Artists who help shape the projects are expert community arts facilitators with a lively range of creative specialisms.

We co-design our projects with partners and participants so we know that they are focussing on the real concerns and interests of the community. That way, our events, workshops, artworks and performances have the power to reach the widest and most connected audience.
